What is a yoke?

Do you have sorrow? Do you have regret? Is there pain that holds you back from hope? Lay it down. Why do you carry such a heavy burden? Do you not know that there is One who has offered to carry this burden for you? His name is Jesus. And over 2000 years ago, He said this, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Now some might be saying, “What is a yoke?” Jesus lived on the earth during a time when farmers plowed their fields with oxen. And they used to take oxen and put them side by side and they were held together by a heavy wooden harness called a yoke. The masters of the oxen put the yoke on the oxen in order to control them and direct them. And the oxen carried this heavy load while doing their work.

How many of us carry a heavy load while we do our work? How many of us carry a heavy load while we live our lives? How many of us carry the burdens that our earthly masters place on us? Burdens of regret, and shame, and sorrow in our spirits. Burdens of pride, arrogance and failure in our work. Burdens of debt, and hungers, and harshness in our lives. Burdens upon burdens.

Listen and obey the words of Jesus, “Come to me…and I will give you rest. I am gentle…and My burden is light.”
