In spiritual matters we can fool ourselves, and think that we are trusting when we are not; but we cannot do so about rent and food, and the needs of our body. They must come or our faith fails. – A. B. Simpson
Sometimes our greatest tests of faith, come in the simplest day-to-day needs. And I am convinced that God delights in revealing Himself to each of us in the simple daily rhythms of life…our need to eat and drink, our need to sleep and rest, our need for clothes and shelter. These simple, yet essential needs of life teach us to trust Him. And more than this, He uses these simple needs to teach us an even greater lessons about our spiritual needs.
Look at what God’s Word teaches us about our spiritual need for food and water.
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” (John 6:35)
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.” (Matthew 5:6)
Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)
Look at what God’s Word teaches us about our spiritual need for sleep and rest.
“Come to Me, all who are weary…and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
Look at what God’s Word teaches us about our need for spiritual clothing.
And I shall send upon you The Promise of my Father…you shall be clothed in power from on high.” (Luke 24:49)
Look at what God’s word teaches us about our need for spiritual shelter.
God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
God knows about your physical and spiritual needs, and He uses all of life to point you to Himself. He knows what you need. So “Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ …for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” (Matthew 6:31 & 32)
No matter where you are today, and no matter what you are facing. He knows. You can trust Him.
